Totara North Residence
Perched above the sheltered waters of Whangaroa Harbour, this Totara North home is a carefully considered response to a challenging coastal site.
The home is defined by its bold, black-clad form — a two-storey composition anchored into the hillside. Low-pitch rooflines extend outward into generous eaves, providing shelter from the coastal elements.
Working with the natural topography was central to the design. Significant engineering solutions were required to stabilise and unlock the site, allowing the home to sit comfortably within the landscape while maximising elevation and outlook.
Expansive glazing captures uninterrupted vistas across the harbour, where boats sit moored below and the water reflects shifting light throughout the day. Interior spaces are arranged to prioritise these sightlines, creating a constant connection between inside and out.
