Mangawhai Retreat
Mangawhai is coastal paradise — and just 120 metres from the estuary lies this hidden gem, nestled among native bush. It’s a site that feels worlds away, offering a tranquil, tree-clad escape with an entirely different atmosphere.
Designing around mature trees is a privilege, and in this case, it became the heart of the project. Our wonderful clients were after a relaxed retreat — a “home away from home” — close to the coast but immersed in nature.
Set on a generous 1,144m² site, the land presented a unique challenge: a five-metre elevation drop halfway through. We embraced this by anchoring the home on the upper platform and opting for a two-storey layout. The elevated position allows the upper level to peek through the trees, offering filtered glimpses of the water beyond.
The lower level houses a double garage, a dedicated workshop space, and a full laundry. A lift provides ease of access, and two generous bedrooms — one designed as an art studio — complete the downstairs plan.
Upstairs, the main living spaces unfold, opening onto a covered deck framed by a louvre roof. Two more bedrooms occupy this floor: a master suite with ensuite and a guest bedroom with a separate bathroom.
Wrapped in mature trees, the upper level feels like a treehouse retreat — a quiet canopy perch just a stone’s throw from the estuary.
For over 30 years, we’ve specialised in designing homes on Northland’s coastal sites. Our experience in crafting architecture that responds to both land and lifestyle is unmatched.
